How Much Does a Wedding Cost?

It’s the million dollar question, right?

This question is one I’m asked by nearly 90% of my couples.

This question is so hard to answer with no knowledge about someones individual wedding. It will all come down to so many aspects such as the location of wedding, the season, the date, how many guests you’re expecting, style of service (cocktail, buffet, seated 3 course etc.) what you’re envisioning, if you have a wet weather backup option, and the list goes on and on!

I’m going to be brutally honest here, no wedding planner has an exact answer! It's a puzzle that you and your partner need to piece together, taking into account your unique preferences, needs, and financial situation. The good news is, if this is already sounding like a headache bringing on the services of a wedding planner can help with creating a realistic budget based on actual estimates.

Let's explore the various factors that influence the cost of a wedding and help you create a budget that reflects your love story.

Location

The location of your wedding can significantly impact your budget. Are you dreaming of a lavish destination wedding on a tropical island, a rustic barn wedding in your hometown, or a chic city celebration? Each setting comes with its own price tag, and it's crucial to choose a location that resonates with your vision and your financial reality.

Also take into account if you’re having your ceremony at a seperate location to your reception, you may be looking at additional location hire expenses.

Guest List

The size of your guest list plays a substantial role in wedding costs. Every guest added means an additional place setting, a seat, and often more food and drinks. Be mindful of your guest count and try to strike a balance between celebrating with your loved ones and staying within your budget.

Venue

Once you've decided on your guest list, consider the venue and catering costs. Some venues offer all-inclusive packages, while others require separate catering and beverage arrangements. The type of cuisine, the quality of service, and the bar options can vary widely in cost, so choose options that align with your wedding vision and budget.

Decor

Your wedding's aesthetic and decor are a reflection of your style and theme. It's important to remember that lavish floral arrangements, lighting, and custom décor can significantly impact your budget. Consider what elements are most important to you, and focus on those while being selective in other areas. Prioritise any non-negotiables in your budget, as quality vendors will always come at a premium price.

Entertainment

The choice of entertainment, whether it's a live band, a DJ, or a string quartet, can influence your budget. Think about the ambiance you want to create and allocate your funds accordingly.

Wedding Attire

Your wedding attire, as well as hair and makeup, can be as extravagant or as modest as you desire. Be honest about what you're willing to invest in your appearance and consider cost-saving options like renting a wedding dress or seeking affordable beauty services. Remember that photos last a lifetime and skimping on these areas is generally not a good idea. I’m all for you get what you pay for, so if you’ve found a really cheap Hair & Makeup Artist the quality may reflect in your photos.

Photography & Videography

Generally when I sit down with my couples at our first meeting, we work out what aspects are really important and outline non-negotiables. Photography and Videography ALWAYS come out as a really important aspect of the day. Capturing your special day is paramount, so I would never recommend to skimp out in this area. However, photography and videography costs can vary widely based on the expertise, capturing style and experience of the professionals you choose. Prioritise preserving your memories, but remember that you may have other options within your budget.

Wedding Planning & Coordination

Hiring a wedding planner or coordinator can make the entire process smoother. While this is an added expense, it can also help you save money by avoiding costly mistakes, guiding you through the budgeting process and negotiating with vendors.

Extra Personal Touches

Consider the unique personal touches that will make your wedding unforgettable. Whether it's custom favours, a photo booth, or special entertainment, these extras can add up quickly. Prioritise those that are absolute must haves!

Unforeseen Circumstances

Lastly, keep a buffer for unexpected costs. There might be last-minute changes, additional requests, or unforeseen circumstances. Having a safety net in your budget can provide peace of mind.

In the world of weddings, the cost is as diverse as the love stories we celebrate. By understanding how various factors influence your budget, you and your partner can make informed decisions that align with your vision. Ultimately, the cost of your wedding is not a one-size-fits-all number; it's a puzzle that you can solve together, ensuring a day that's both beautiful and budget-friendly. So, take a deep breath, embrace the planning process, and remember that the journey to your "happily ever after" is just as important as the destination.
